Hey Chris, great article. I agree with everything you said! The great thing about this song is that it holds that ambivalence in almost perfect balance. It is really a “marriage song” not a wedding song. I hear in it the nascent sentiments that would emerge transformed into something much more embittered in Idiot Wind. The narrator is at once absorbed totally in the relationship and repelled by the vulnerability it induces. Enjoying discovering your stuff.

I think “Planet Waves” is an unacknowledged masterpiece, one that shows the full range and depth of his art. It is an album I never get tired of listening to. I agree with all you have said about “Wedding Song”, a track I keep returning to precisely because of its ambivalence. Listening to “Dirge”, “Never Say Goodbye” and “Wedding Song” consecutively creates images of a relationship that is on a knife edge, one in which the parties can’t live comfortably with each other but nor can they live apart.
