MASK
by Chris Gregory

mask I'm peering from behind a mask,
A mob is shaped into a crocodile
Winding around me. I'm swept up
Carried on the backs of impossible beasts,
Horn and claw are raised and tails sway

I have no face. Perspectives are torn
Out of shape. Some are redrawn
But nothing escapes the architecture's demands
That its cries will be heard above the roaring
Of the crowd. I'm lost in a word

Smoke is pouring up out of the earth.
Banners are trampled in the headlong rush,
The onward marching feet and the thunder of hooves
That fills my ears as the face behind the mask reappears,
Pouring out of my mouth

No one remembers, everything is wiped out.
The whiteness hangs in an envelope,
Meaning is loosened. My grip is gone,
I open my eyes. I am alone.
